The Importance of Minerals in Human Nutrition

As children we are constantly instructed to eat certain fruits and vegetables, some of which we may not have particularly enjoyed. Once we reach maturity we begin learning the reason we are taught to eat the things we do, and what those particular fruits and vegetables provide. The Encyclopedia Brittanica defines “mineral” as a “chemical substance (such as iron or zinc) that occurs naturally in certain foods and that is important for good health”. These “certain foods” are of course, the fruits and vegetables we are supposed to eat every day as part of a healthy, balanced diet. But why are minerals important for proper nutrition?

In this article we will explain the importance of minerals in human health, the function of key minerals in the human body, and how an ionic mineral supplement supports overall health and well-being.

Minerals are as important to the human body as oxygen is for sustaining life. All tissue and internal fluids contain minerals: bones, teeth, soft tissue, muscle, blood, and nerve cells. They maintain physiological processes in the nervous system, aid digestion and metabolism, and assist in utilizing all of the nutrients in food. They are also important in maintaining blood and tissue fluid levels, preventing them from becoming either too acidic or too alkaline; a slight change in blood concentration could be dangerous.

It is a scientifically proven fact that minerals are an essential component of the human body, yet the body does not produce a single mineral element. This is why it is so important to eat fruits and vegetables—they contain minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, and zinc, which the body relies on. However, minerals are found not only in fruits and vegetables, but also in meats, sauces, breads, and fish.

The Role of Different Minerals in Human Nutrition

According to The Institute of Medicine, the average person should consume up to 7,000 mg per day of trace minerals in their diet. Trace minerals, also referred to as “microminerals”, include iron, zinc, iodine and others, which are each needed in very small amounts. On the other hand, major or “macrominerals” such as potassium, calcium, and phosphorus are needed in greater quantities.

Let’s take a look at some of the important functions of these minerals:

Potassium

Maintains proper fluid balance, nerve transmission, and muscle contraction.

Calcium

Needed for healthy bones and teeth, also helps muscles relax and contract, assists nerve function, regulates blood pressure and blood clotting, and improves immune system health.

Phosphorus

Another important mineral for healthy bones and teeth, it is found in every cell. Maintains acid-base balance throughout the body.

Iron

Part of hemoglobin, a molecule in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body. Also used for energy metabolism.

Zinc

Creates protein and genetic materials, affects taste perception, helps wounds to heal, and also influences proper reproductive as well as immune system health.

Iodine

A major component of thyroid, helps regulate metabolism.

A complete list of major and minor minerals and their sources can be found in this article.

Because of the critical role minerals play in many functions in the body, it is easy to see why a deficiency can seriously compromise health. And though many of the foods we eat contain some minerals, they often aren’t enough.

Why Ionic Minerals?

As a result of widespread use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in agriculture, much of the earth’s soil has been depleted of essential nutrients. Therefore, produce grown in these soils do not provide the right levels of major and minor minerals needed for good health. In addition, certain compounds found in plants can affect the bioavailability of minerals, resulting in lower absorption into the body.

Though other factors such as stress, disease, and certain medications can decrease the absorption of minerals in the body, there is a viable solution: taking a mineral supplement in ionic form. The term “ionic” when used in the context of liquids is often associated with the term “dissolved” and refers to the nature of the solids in a liquid medium. When a solid substance has achieved an ionic state, it has reached its smallest molecular composition. This form is easily absorbed by the body and is extremely bioavailable at the cellular level.

This is an advantage over colloidal minerals, a term that means solids are “suspended” in liquid. If particles are suspended, they are left standing and some will eventually separate, while others will remain in permanent suspension. These minerals, due to their large molecular size, are not as readily absorbed, evenly distributed, or fully transported throughout the body.

Mineral BioSciences® has partnered with companies in a variety of industries to advance a multitude of products with our natural ionic minerals. More recently, Mineral BioSciences has created unique ionic formulations to create a brand new product line for healthy living, Totála® Cellular Health and IoniCell®.

What is Totála Cellular Health?

Totála Cellular Health is a unique dietary supplement infused with ionic minerals and fulvic acid, which allows nutrients to be more readily absorbed by the body. Its balanced mineral composition aids in the reproductive, digestive, immune, endocrine, musculoskeletal, and circulatory functions of the human body. This makes Totála Cellular Health a beneficial component of a healthy lifestyle as it improves energy levels, cell vitality and performance by stimulating mitochondrial metabolism. Its liquid form makes it convenient to incorporate into your daily life, and become a wonderfully simplistic way of obtaining the ideal amount of minerals your body needs.

What is IoniCell?

IoniCell is a specialized multi-mineral, fulvic acid complex that not only assists with cellular protection and energy, but also healthy blood glucose management.
